Unlocking The Puzzles
Modelling the complex dynamics of the workplace
Our evidence produced a number of puzzles that broadly group around three inter-related themes (tap to reveal more information):
-
Definitional Puzzle
The academic literature in particular throws up multiple, often conflicting, definitions of what ‘engagement’ is. This creates the definitional puzzle shown in the image, often equated with the idea of Old Wine in New Bottles.
-
Measurement Puzzle
The pre-occupation with the engagement score – an index principally created by consultants to provide a potent symbol of how ‘engaged’ the workforce is. But is it really no better than a Wheel of Fortune on a popular games show?
-
Outcome Puzzle
This looks at the outcomes of engagement – how does it reveal itself in practice in terms of workforce behaviours and performance?
